Child Care Costs Consume 20% of Family Income, Forcing Financial Sacrifices

BTCCSquare news:

Families are allocating nearly a fifth of their annual income to child care, with some spending more on caregiving than their mortgage payments. A Care.com survey reveals the average parent dedicates 20% of household earnings to child care—a figure that climbs higher when accounting for senior, pet, and home care expenses.

Day care and preschool costs have surged 4.8% year-over-year, outstripping December's 2.7% inflation rate. The financial strain is compelling households to slash discretionary spending, delay major purchases, and raid savings. "Caregiving demands are pushing parents beyond their limits," warns Care.com CEO Brad Wilson. Persistent pressures risk driving more caregivers to reduce work hours or exit the workforce entirely.

The care cost crisis represents a systemic drain on consumer spending power. As essential care expenses claim larger portions of family budgets, discretionary sectors—including entertainment and travel—face prolonged demand suppression.
